If you own a small business, you may be wondering if you need a website for your small business. Building a new website can be costly, and with several free social media platforms available, you might think you could run your business from there. Indeed many businesses rely solely on their social media channels for their digital presence. However, this is a risky strategy.
A radio interview I listened to yesterday exemplifies why depending on social media to market your business is unwise. Barber to the stars Duke Andoh uses his Instagram account to promote his business and take client bookings. Recently someone hacked and took over his Instagram account. During that time, the hacker impersonated Duke, messaging his contacts and taking bookings and payments for barber cuts. Duke has now regained control of his account, but his reputation is damaged, and he's significantly out of pocket doing free cuts to compensate those who paid money.
Eight reasons why you need a website for your small business
- You have complete control over your website. Whereas you're not in control of the social media platforms, and they can change the rules of engagement at any time. Facebook used to be a brilliant free marketing tool for small businesses, but the algorithm changes mean it's now nigh on impossible to get good reach unless you pay.
- Having a website makes your business look more professional. It shows that you've invested money and time in setting up your business and that you exist. It also means you can have a branded email address (e.g. ajobson@straightmarketing.co.uk) which looks more credible than a Gmail email account.
- Your potential customers will be able to find you through Google and other search engines. Without a website, your business is invisible to the 4.5 billion active internet users worldwide. My go-to place when I want to purchase something is Google, and I know I'm not alone.
- You can generate and nurture new leads by providing useful content to attract potential customers to your website. Once they're on your site, you can encourage them to sign up for your newsletter or to receive downloads.
- Even if customers hear of you elsewhere, they will want to check your business out. Your website can provide the credibility and endorsement they're seeking.
- Your website is where you showcase your products or services and demonstrate your brand. It's your shop front.
- If you sell products having a website expands your geographic reach by enabling e-commerce sales.
- Your website can improve customer service by providing useful information for your customers, which is accessible 24/7.
If you need a website for your small business, I recommend using a professional website company to create a new website. However, if your budget is limited and you have the time, there are several free website builders such as WordPress, Shopify, Wix and SquareSpace.
