Think about your marketing objectives and decide what marketing activities you will undertake throughout the year to achieve them. Doing the planning up front will ensure your marketing efforts are more considered and likely to achieve greater return on investment. It’ll also help you evaluate opportunities that arise during the year and save you wasting time and money on unnecessary marketing activities.

Take a critical look at your brand identity, your marketing literature, your website and all other external facing materials. Ask yourself if they accurately reflect your brand and appeal to the wants of your target customers.

We always treat marketing literature, websites etc. as the marketing building blocks – the platform to launch your marketing. It’s important to have these in place before you actively market yourself to your target audience.

Review what you have to decide whether they are fit for purpose and identify the gaps. Then make a commitment to make any necessary changes.

Take some time to review your customer base. Are there any lapsed customers that you haven’t used your services for a while? Past customers have already experienced your service so are much easier to market to than potential customers.

The new year is a good excuse to get back in touch with past customers and see if they can be coaxed back. Your method of getting in touch will depend on the types of customers and the services/products you could provide. This could be anything from an email newsletter to a telephone catch up.

Regular blogging is still one of the most effective ways to improve your search engine rankings. It also gives potential customers a much better impression of your company when they visit your website. What does it say about a company when their last blog/news item is several months old?

Write yourself an editorial calendar – basically a schedule of blog topics – and commit to posting a new blog at least twice a month.

Monitor your marketing effectiveness by building in tracking mechanisms wherever you can (this is much easier to do with digital). Also ask your customers how they found you and record this information. Regularly review to establish what marketing activities are working best for you so that you can do more of the good stuff and less of the things that aren’t working.
