We’ve written a lot about blogging on this blog – why you should blog, what to blog and even how to promote your blog. This week we have turned our attention to writing an SEO friendly blog. After all one of the key reasons for blogging is to get your website to appear in search results so it is important that you maximise this as best you can.
Writing an SEO friendly blog – our step-by-step guide:
1. Do your keyword research
Think about what you want to be found for and do some research to find out what keywords people are actually typing into the search engines. Use free tools such as the Google Keyword tool and Word Tracker to help you refine your keywords/phrases. Use one to two keywords/phrases per blog post.
2. Focus on the title (h1)
Include the keywords you have identified in Step 1 in the title of your blog post. Bear in mind that generally search engines put more weight on the words at the start of a title than the words used later in the title.
3. Use sub-headings (h2, h3)
Separate the content with keyword rich sub-headings. Not only will this help with SEO but it will make it easier for the reader to follow the blog.
4. Get your keyword density right
You should aim for a keyword density (the number of times a keyword appears on a page compared to the total number of words) of 1-3%. Spread your keywords out throughout your post so that the content flows well.
5. Include links
Link important words to relevant previous blogs or other pages on your website. Search engines generally assume that a blog post that has been linked to has more authority than one that has not.
6. Add images
Including relevant images in your blog provides another opportunity to add keywords as ‘Alt Text’. Make sure you have licence to use the images though!
7. Write a meta description
Meta descriptions are the short descriptions (up to 150 characters) that show up in search results alongside your blog post. Use your keywords within the meta description and remember to ‘front load’ the more important words.
8. Create a permalink
Make sure you create a permalink. This gives you an opportunity to name your link and use keywords within it. The permalink for this blog post is: https://www.straightmarketing.co.uk/2013/02/writing-seo-friendly-blog-10-steps/
9. Use tags and categories
Include keywords in the categories and tags that you assign to your blog post.
10. Most importantly – don’t forget the reader!
Whilst getting a good Google ranking might be a key objective for your blogging strategy don’t make it your sole objective to the detriment of the content. Remember it is the human reader who you are trying to appeal to and if the copy doesn’t grab them and persuade them to buy, then there’s little benefit to achieving a high ranking!
If you follow as many of these steps as possible each time you write a blog you will see the fruits of your labour and your rankings increase!
